{"id":19059,"date":"2019-08-22T11:57:12","date_gmt":"2019-08-22T09:57:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.aleydasolis.com\/?p=19059"},"modified":"2019-08-22T12:56:19","modified_gmt":"2019-08-22T10:56:19","slug":"7-handy-seo-tools-functionalities-that-facilitate-a-fast-web-migrations-redesigns-validation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.aleydasolis.com\/en\/search-engine-optimization\/7-handy-seo-tools-functionalities-that-facilitate-a-fast-web-migrations-redesigns-validation\/","title":{"rendered":"7 Handy SEO Tools Functionalities that facilitate a Fast Web Migrations &#038; Redesigns validation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although in SEO we all know that Web migrations, redesigns and structural Web changes are some of those scenarios where is critical to have SEO input and validation since the planning stage we all have likely run into scenarios where the changes are launched and help is requested afterwards (this is certainly one of those scenarios that generate many of my clients!).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Web migrations are one of my favorite topics and in the past I\u2019ve shared about:\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.slideshare.net\/aleydasolis\/winning-seo-when-doing-web-migrations-smssyd19\">Overall best practices and steps for successful Web migrations<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/moz.com\/blog\/recovering-your-organic-search-traffic-from-a-web-migration-gone-wrong\">How to recover your Web traffic after a Web migration has gone wrong<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and\u00a0 filmed a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aleydasolis.com\/en\/crawling-mondays\/recovering-your-organic-traffic-after-a-web-migration-gone-wrong-crawlingmondays-6th-episode\/\">Crawling Mondays episode about the topic showing how to do the main validations<\/a>,<\/span><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/searchengineland.com\/monitoring-web-migrations-a-checklist-for-an-effective-switch-291131\">How to monitor Web migrations\u00a0<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.searchenginejournal.com\/seo-friendly-website-rebrand\/231911\/\">How to achieve an SEO friendly rebrand<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.slideshare.net\/aleydasolis\/the-seo-guide-to-migrate-international-websites-smprofs\">The SEO Guide to Migrate International Websites<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aleydasolis.com\/en\/search-engine-optimization\/http-https-migration-checklist-google-docs\/\">HTTP to HTTPS SEO friendly Migration Checklist\u00a0<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However I was asked a few days ago about a topic I hadn&#8217;t yet specifically covered: those tools functionalities that I find particularly useful to do post Web migrations and redesigns validations, and that can highly facilitate and speed the identification of issues&#8230; especially when you don&#8217;t have access to all the data and you might need to start from scratch.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So this time I would like to show those functionalities of popular SEO tools that I find highly useful and save a great deal of research and analysis time when identifying a Web migration or redesign impact, especially handy in those scenarios where we haven\u2019t been involved from the start (so let&#8217;s assume here you don&#8217;t have a rank tracking tool monitoring the evolution of the site targeted terms), the changes haven\u2019t been documented, we might also have limited access to historical data from the site directly and therefore we need to do more research but at the same time, a fast analysis to take action fast to avoid losing (any\/more) traffic.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>1. Validate the old top ranked pages status\/redirects behavior<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s critical to do a parallel crawl of the old pages (besides doing a full crawl of the new site version is) that used to attract more traffic and conversion to the site via rankings, links, shares\u2026 to identify if any of them hadn\u2019t been 301-redirected to their new relevant URLs versions, or are showing an error status, non-relevant, looped or chained redirects.\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To obtain the old pages to list crawl you can use the top ones from the Google Search Console and a further list from Google Analytics historical data, which I also recommend to validate, however, when doing the initial fast check I like to prioritize the validation of the old ranked pages using the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.semrush.com\/\">SEMrush<\/a> organic search report selecting the most recent date previous the Website redesign\/migration.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By doing a list crawl of these old ranked pages I can directly obtain the queries and positions for which they used to rank before along the search volume of these terms and estimated traffic coming from them, and besides verifying the redirect behavior\u00a0 also being able to easily:\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prioritize them based on the previous rankings, targeted search volume (potential) and estimated previous traffic.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Identify if they are redirecting now to non-relevant or less optimized pages that would have a harder time keeping the old rankings for those particular queries.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For this I like to use <a href=\"https:\/\/www.screamingfrog.co.uk\/seo-spider\/\">Screaming Frog<\/a> list crawl feature that allows you to also export (through the \u201cexport\u201d option at the top) the crawled URLs in the same order as you imported and crawled them, making them much easier to paste directly in the sheet you had of the URLs with their old ranked queries and additional position and traffic SEMrush metrics.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-19068\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aleydasolis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/old-ranked-urls-crawl-p-806x1024.png\" alt=\"old ranked redirects validation\" width=\"806\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.aleydasolis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/old-ranked-urls-crawl-p-806x1024.png 806w, https:\/\/www.aleydasolis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/old-ranked-urls-crawl-p-236x300.png 236w, https:\/\/www.aleydasolis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/old-ranked-urls-crawl-p-768x976.png 768w, https:\/\/www.aleydasolis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/old-ranked-urls-crawl-p.png 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 806px) 100vw, 806px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can do this with mobile search rankings too, particularly important for sites that are mobile first, with a higher share of mobile traffic or migrating from an independent mobile configuration to a responsive or dynamic publishing using a single URL for mobile and desktop pages versions:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-19071\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aleydasolis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/mobile-ranked-pages-queries-p.png\" alt=\"mobile ranked pages queries\" width=\"999\" height=\"574\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.aleydasolis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/mobile-ranked-pages-queries-p.png 999w, https:\/\/www.aleydasolis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/mobile-ranked-pages-queries-p-300x172.png 300w, https:\/\/www.aleydasolis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/mobile-ranked-pages-queries-p-768x441.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 999px) 100vw, 999px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use the \u201credirect &amp; canonical chains\u201d feature of Screaming Frog to validate if there are any additional redirects after the first one or if the redirect destination is canonicalized to another URL -a potential reason for not recovering the old ranked positions even if it\u2019s relevant for them-.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-19074\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aleydasolis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/redirect-canonical-chains-1.png\" alt=\"redirects canonical chains\" width=\"999\" height=\"133\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.aleydasolis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/redirect-canonical-chains-1.png 999w, https:\/\/www.aleydasolis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/redirect-canonical-chains-1-300x40.png 300w, https:\/\/www.aleydasolis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/redirect-canonical-chains-1-768x102.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 999px) 100vw, 999px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>If you have the capacity I would also highly recommend to use <a href=\"https:\/\/www.deepcrawl.com\/\">Deepcrawl<\/a>\u00a0(better for bigger sites) or <a href=\"https:\/\/sitebulb.com\/\">Sitebulb<\/a>\u00a0that will allow you to easily visualize the evolution of what you find in the re-crawls\u00a0you will do (and easily compare them) after making the relevant SEO implementations to fix the spotted issues and see if you&#8217;re improving as expected.<\/p>\n<h2><b>2. Identify how the URLs changed for the top terms with drops<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another handy functionality can be found in the \u201cURL Changes\u201d report from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sistrix.com\/\">Sistrix<\/a>, that allows you to compare the rankings (along filters to select specific positions) between two dates (you can select the ones before and after the redesign\/migration\/change) as well as show the ranked URLs in these two different dates, with the option to prioritize based on the ranked queries search volume and position changes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This can highly facilitate you to spot:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Which are the terms that were ranking better before that have dropped the most prioritizing those with the highest search volume<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Which are the URLs ranking now vs. before for the high searched queries that have dropped the most<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-19077\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aleydasolis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/sistrix-url-change-p.png\" alt=\"URL Changes\" width=\"1000\" height=\"615\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.aleydasolis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/sistrix-url-change-p.png 1000w, https:\/\/www.aleydasolis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/sistrix-url-change-p-300x185.png 300w, https:\/\/www.aleydasolis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/sistrix-url-change-p-768x472.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>3. Verify if there are backlinks pointing to non-301 redirected pages<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sistrix has also another very useful and easy to use report, the \u201cbroken links\u201d under the Links section, where they show any links going to pages showing an error status, or with temporary redirects, or redirects chains that end up in error pages.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is report highly facilitates to spot those old pages that haven\u2019t been properly redirected that are getting external links and need to be prioritized to be fixed. These might be very old pages, or orphan pages that might not even be ranking but getting referral traffic and link popularity through these links, and therefore important to properly redirect to provide a good user experience and pass the old pages link popularity.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-19080\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aleydasolis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/broken-links-p.png\" alt=\"linked broken pages\" width=\"1000\" height=\"473\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.aleydasolis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/broken-links-p.png 1000w, https:\/\/www.aleydasolis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/broken-links-p-300x142.png 300w, https:\/\/www.aleydasolis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/broken-links-p-768x363.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><b>4. Compare the before and after of the old top pages content and main technical configuration\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If the site that you\u2019re analyzing has not only gone through a URL structure migration but also a redesign, or you\u2019re concerned about technical and content changes that the Website might have gone through during the migration or redesign but you don\u2019t have access to directly check the old Website version -sometimes there are no copies of the old site version to easily check or no way to recover it for validation purposes-, then you can use the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/web\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Internet Archive Wayback Machine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to compare the old top URLs with the new ones, especially those that have suffered from rankings drops or are particularly important from a search, user and conversion perspective.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can check which of your URLs are in the Internet Archive by adding your domain, going to the \u201cSummary\u201d page and selecting \u201cExplore your domain URLs\u201d option, which will give you a list of the URLs as well as the dates from when they were grabbed and number of captures.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-19082\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aleydasolis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/wayback-machine-urls-p.png\" alt=\"Wayback Machine URLs\" width=\"1000\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.aleydasolis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/wayback-machine-urls-p.png 1000w, https:\/\/www.aleydasolis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/wayback-machine-urls-p-300x120.png 300w, https:\/\/www.aleydasolis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/wayback-machine-urls-p-768x307.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can then select the desired URL to verify and choose the date previous the migration\/redesign, to verify how it looked then, the included content, check the HTML and verify the old metadata, canonicalization, meta robots, internal links, etc. and compare them with the ones of the new page version.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can also make use of the relatively new \u201cChanges\u201d feature to select two dates and visually compare how they look through the Wayback machine interface directly.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can do this in bulk too with a list crawl of the old URLs in the Internet Archive site along their new URLs versions in your own site and compare both versions main SEO related configuration much more easily.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-19084\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aleydasolis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/list-crawl-urls-comparison-wayback-2-p.png\" alt=\"List crawl comparison Wayback Machine\" width=\"1001\" height=\"948\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.aleydasolis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/list-crawl-urls-comparison-wayback-2-p.png 1001w, https:\/\/www.aleydasolis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/list-crawl-urls-comparison-wayback-2-p-300x284.png 300w, https:\/\/www.aleydasolis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/list-crawl-urls-comparison-wayback-2-p-768x727.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1001px) 100vw, 1001px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><b>5. Compare your top keywords SERPs to check your previous and current competitors and SERP features<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You might want to check the SERPs for your top terms before vs. now -especially for those for which you have experienced a rankings or CTR drop- to better understand if there might have been other rankings changes besides your own drop, and which were your old competitors vs. the new ones.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can do this even if you hadn\u2019t been specifically tracking the terms by using the \u201cKeyword Overview\u201d report in SEMrush, where you can select any date and see up to the top 100 ranked pages whether in mobile or desktop for any query, which you can use to check the the before and after SERPs for your top dropped terms.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-19087\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aleydasolis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/before-after-serp-comparison-p.png\" alt=\"Before-After SERP Comparison\" width=\"1001\" height=\"616\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.aleydasolis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/before-after-serp-comparison-p.png 1001w, https:\/\/www.aleydasolis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/before-after-serp-comparison-p-300x185.png 300w, https:\/\/www.aleydasolis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/before-after-serp-comparison-p-768x473.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1001px) 100vw, 1001px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Besides checking the specific rankings and competitors change in your top terms SERPs you can also compare the SERP features before and after, from which you were previously included and which were these pages and compare with the ones you are being shown with at the moment to identify any gap that might be negatively affecting your pages search results visibility and CTR, to prioritize your new pages optimization accordingly, for example to implement structured data.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-19089\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aleydasolis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/serp-features-comparison-p.png\" alt=\"SERP Features Comparison\" width=\"1000\" height=\"835\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.aleydasolis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/serp-features-comparison-p.png 1000w, https:\/\/www.aleydasolis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/serp-features-comparison-p-300x251.png 300w, https:\/\/www.aleydasolis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/serp-features-comparison-p-768x641.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><b>6. Monitor the migration rankings evolution for any of your top terms and old vs. new pages\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can also use Google Data Studio along Google Search Console for free with the \u201cBlended Data\u201d option (about which<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aleydasolis.com\/en\/search-engine-optimization\/using-google-data-studio-actionable-search-console-performance-report\/\"> I&#8217;ve written in the past here<\/a>) but in this case to integrate and easily compare the previous vs. the new site versions after a migration. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/simoncox.com\/article\/using-google-data-studio-to-review-your-http-to-https-migration\">Simon Cox published a great step by step post here<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0sharing how to integrate and compare both versions by visualizing the impressions, clicks and average position data through charts, as well as to integrate Google Analytics data in them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What I&#8217;ve found particularly useful to also do is to use the \u201cfilter controls\u201d to have more control to not only compare impressions, clicks and average positions at a site level, but also per query, page or a group of them, as well as segment per devices, as can be seen below, in order to more easily spot specific changes in a group of important terms or areas of the site.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-19092\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aleydasolis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/data-studio-before-after-comparison-p.png\" alt=\"Google Data Studio Before and After with Search Console Data\" width=\"1000\" height=\"973\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.aleydasolis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/data-studio-before-after-comparison-p.png 1000w, https:\/\/www.aleydasolis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/data-studio-before-after-comparison-p-300x292.png 300w, https:\/\/www.aleydasolis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/data-studio-before-after-comparison-p-768x747.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can additionally use the table charts to show side by side the new vs old ranked pages along their queries and their related metrics to facilitate their comparison, and identify top old URLs that <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are still ranking and receiving more impressions\/clicks than the new ones, and see if it\u2019s because of redirects issues, relevance\/cannibalization problems of new pages, etc.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-19094\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aleydasolis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/old-new-blended-comparison-gds-p.png\" alt=\"Old vs New Ranked Pages Queries Blended Comparison Data Studio\" width=\"1000\" height=\"918\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.aleydasolis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/old-new-blended-comparison-gds-p.png 1000w, https:\/\/www.aleydasolis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/old-new-blended-comparison-gds-p-300x275.png 300w, https:\/\/www.aleydasolis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/old-new-blended-comparison-gds-p-768x705.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><b>7. Put your before and after organic search visibility evolution in context vs your competitors<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I can&#8217;t finish without mentioning a functionality that I find particularly useful when doing a migration or structural Web change: the Sistrix \u201cVisibility Index\u201d, which is probably the best I&#8217;ve found to put into context the evolution of the old vs. new site versions organic search visibility, to better understand the impact of the migration\/redesign by comparing the old and new sites along the competition too. I really like how this comparison functionality it\u2019s so flexible, allowing to compare the mobile or desktop visibility evolution of up to 4 URL paths, subdomains or root domains too (I used it a lot when doing http to https migrations too) for any of their supported countries.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter
