Alltop is a “directory like” meta-list of different topics (from gardening and weddings to venture capital and python) where the most authoritative online content is included in each “topic”… and I call them topics and not categories since Alltop doesn’t have any defined “taxonomy” or structure.. but its topics are placed in alphabetical order. This is its first Web 2.0 “characteristic”.
It also operates thanks to the Web 2.0, since it doesn’t have a link with a description of the site -like old directories- but it takes the RSS feed of blogs or sites and includes their last 5 posts titles, so the user has a very good idea about the content of the site or blog. This is also a great way to keep you updated with the most recent information about a specific topic, since the RSS feeds of all the blogs /sites are refreshed every 10 minutes.
This is what new directories should be like! A directory powered by the Web 2.0: blogs and feeds.
I highly recommend its SEO, Social Media, Startups, Design, Rich Internet Applications and Travel sections.
What should be Alltop next step? It is already including “country-focused” content with its Argentina and Brazil sections, but I would like to see different “language focused” Alltop versions. For example, a “Spanish” Alltop that covers the most important topics in this language.
I would also like that Alltop lets me to customize more the information I get -and not only “hide” sites-, but also have my own “profile” where I can add more feeds for each topic, and have a personalized “Home Page” showing only the topics I select.
What do you think? What would you like to see in Alltop?
